How is everyone holding up? Let’s chat!

Engagement is down. Grades are down. Parent contacts are through the roof. Stress is up. Rent is up. My district is already talking about firing teachers. Microsoft is paying some staff to stay home through at least the end of 2021 – interpretation: next year is going to look a lot like this year.
And even through all of that, I’d be fine if I knew my students were fine. But how can we know that? We can’t know that in a normal year, and we at least get to see their faces and I don’t know … write them an encouraging note? Offer a snack and talk for five minutes? Shake a hand or give a hug?

Things are holding steady. In NOLA we are no longer a COVID19 hotspot but in the last month our numbers have shifted back to an alarming trend. Students are in schools (virtual, physical, or hybrid) but folks are stressed, overall. I think we’re looking forward to resting and recharging as much as possible during the winter break as we prepare for the colder Winter season. I have been encouraged by the teachers and leaders that I work with who are finding ways to make schools safe and engaging for students. I have hope and that’s what I using to order my steps day by day.
