The Bronx Science Research Partnership

Bronx, New York

Students from multiple schools accessing high-level science research and learning.

When the state-of-the-art Stanley Manne Institute opened at the Bronx High School of Science, the goal was to increase student access to space, equipment, and guidance for pursuing high-level scientific research and experiments. The Bronx Science Research Partnership (BSRP) does just that—ensuring these resources are available not just to students at the highly selective Bronx Science High School, but to those from the community at large.

The BSRP currently includes six high schools in the neighborhood, all driven by a shared mission: that through working as a community, they can leverage resources and build relationships more successfully than by working alone.

The BSRP is also part of Imagine NYC Schools, a dynamic partnership between New York City Public Schools and XQ to design innovative, high-quality schools with equity and excellence at their core. Students, teachers, families, and community members are coming together to imagine high schools that are engaging, inclusive, and student-centered—schools that prepare all students for a wide variety of postsecondary options, and all the future has to offer. By making the resources of Bronx Science High School and the Manne Institute available to students across the Bronx, the BSRP makes smart use of time, space, and technology. Students at participating high schools have full access to the Manne Institute’s resources. With more than 10,000 square feet of dedicated space for professional-grade science labs, the Manne Institute empowers students to conduct independent scientific research, run experiments, and take on complex research questions. BSRP students can access the Institute’s resources during the school day, after school, or on weekends. They can also join a Bronx Science program or develop an independent project through their school. The partnership also connects students to local organizations, where they have access to real-world learning and experts in the field.

The resources and network of the BSRP build up students’ overall confidence and sense of belonging in science spaces. Students access leading scientists as mentors, hear from experts in the field about possible career paths, and build relationships with each other through community-wide BSRP events. For example, at the Bronx Science Research Partnership Science Expo students get to share their work with each other and with the wider community. Students also collaborate on projects, like a BSRP submission to the Genes in Space competition, and have the opportunity to share their expertise through mentoring middle-school students at PS/MS 95, another local partner.
